Need to be confident.

6:45am

“How can we have a wine fridge full of bottles, but no edible food in the kitchen yet?” I ask.

“Priorities,” my dad replies with a grin, sucking down a gulp of water. Sweat is trickling down his forehead after our run.

I search through the cabinets, realizing that I forgot to get breakfast for this morning.

Again.

“Shit,” I mumble, closing another food-less cabinet.

“What are you going to eat?” I ask, knowing that my dad is usually a three-egg omelet, coffee, and juice guy.

“I’ll get breakfast on the way to the office. My secretary recommended a few shops that have good breakfast sandwiches. And apparently, I have to try the sausage roll,” my dad says, like he’s reading it off a menu.

I laugh. “That’s good for you, but what about me? I’m going to starve if Mom keeps it up,” I tell him, plopping down onto a barstool. I steal my dad’s water bottle, taking a large gulp.

“And why is it Mom’s job to stock the fridge when there are two other capable humans living in this house?” my mom says out of nowhere.

I glance over my shoulder, seeing her emerge from the bedroom with an arched eyebrow directed at me.

“We aren’t living in the 1950s. I think you can both acquire your own breakfasts.”

“Can’t argue with that,” my dad says, walking toward her.

He puts one hand on her waist before dropping his head down to kiss her. I frown, glancing away from them.

Ew.

“Morning,” she says to Dad.

“Morning, honey,” he replies, shifting past her.

He opens up a cabinet to reveal a small coffee machine. He turns to look at me, shooting me a quick wink.

My eyes instantly light up.

“Want one?” he asks.

“Is that even a question?” I reply excitedly. “I’d ask for a cappuccino, but I don’t think we even have any milk.”

“An Americano it is,” he says, getting started on our coffees.

My mom leans on the counter next to him.

“I think Mallory owes me an apology.” Mom’s words are directed at my dad, but I know they’re meant for me.

“You’re right. You’re right,” I say, putting my hands up in the air in defeat. “I’m sorry. I just assumed that after furnishing the entire house, restocking my closet, and arranging my room, you’d want to be the one to fill up the fridge.”

My dad chokes back a laugh.

“We have a grocery delivery arriving this morning,” she says flatly, giving me an unimpressed look.

“Thank you,” I say, hopping off the barstool and walking over to give her a quick peck on the cheek. And because my dad’s finished with my coffee.

I take the warm cup happily, moving back to the stool.

“I’m glad to see you kept up your runs. You’re in great shape,” my dad says, making another cup.

“Thanks.” I smile broadly. Because coming from my dad, that’s a big compliment.

“Don’t forget. We’re meeting with the personal trainer tomorrow morning,” Mom tells me.

“Are you going to the gym now?” I ask, noticing that she’s in a matching workout set.
